Apple ramped up its spending on research and development by nearly $1 billion in the 12 months ending Sept. 29, bringing the company's total R&D investment to $3.4 billion, according to the company's annual 10-K report filed with the SEC on Wednesday.
That represents a significant 39% increase from the $2.4 billion Apple spent on R&D in the 2011 fiscal year, though as a percentage of Apple's total sales, R&D spending actually remained flat at 2%.
Even so, Apple continues to spend much less on R&D -- both in total dollars and as a percentage of sales -- than most of its major competitors in the tech space.
