The outage appears to be intermittent, with the service going down for some users for about 10 minutes. Service was then briefly restored, but soon afterward all access to mail.google.com appears to have stopped. Gmail on mobile appears down, too, although it was working during the initial outage.
The status site "Is it down?" says mail.google.com is down.
Mashable first became aware of the issue when Gmail service went down for most of our staff, although some personal email accounts and mobile service appeared unaffected. Concurrently Twitter exploded with posts about the outage:
