With iOS 7, Apple Leads by Following
Apple has shown the world the future of its iOS software — and it's gorgeous
As Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice-president of software engineering, took us through slides during the WWDC keynote that revealed beautiful translucent layers and genuinely useful features such the Control Center, I'm sure I wasn't the only iPhone user thinking, "Take my money now."
Now that we're moving further away from the reality distortion field that accompanies every Apple event, however, it's worth asking: What did Apple really unveil at WWDC 2013? Is iOS 7 truly innovative in mobile? Read more...

The State of Apple 2013: Quiet, Thoughtful And Serious
What a difference a year makes
At WWDC 2012, Apple CEO Tim Cook's keynote opened with a comedian. Her name was Siri. She warmed up the crowd with jokes about Samsung's new fridge, and speculation that the new flavors of Android OS were being dreamed up by Ben and Jerry's. It went on to feature the up-and-coming executive Scott Forstall loudly proclaiming how fantastic his new iOS 6 app — Apple Maps — was going to be.
The WWDC 2013 Cook keynote couldn't have been more different. It opened with a video devoted to Apple's design principles
"Designing something requires focus," it read over a quiet piano soundtrack. "It takes time. There are a thousand 'no's for every 'yes.'" Read more...

But rival Pandora, which launched in 2000, weighed in, essentially telling Mashable that iTunes Radio is nothing new and critics shouldn't be ringing the death knell.

NHL Coach Fired Over Skype
When the NHL's Edmonton Oilers fired head coach Ralph Krueger on Saturday, they did so in decidedly 21st-century fashion: via Skype
Krueger lasted just one season in Edmonton. He led the team to a record of 19-22-7 during this lockout-shortened season, but the Oilers missed the NHL playoffs for the seventh straight year. Despite that lack of success, however, the way in which Krueger was let go certainly raised some eyebrows around the sports world
Krueger says an ominous friend request from Oilers general manager Craig MacTavish marked the beginning of the end of his run with the team
"This past Thursday he had requested that I accept him on Skype so he could Skype me," Krueger told the Canadian sports site TSN. "When the conversation began it went to business very quickly and he was quite clear with the message that ... he felt it was necessary for him to hire a new head coach." Read more...
