20 WTF New Year’s Resolutions

Ringing in 2013 properly requires a few things: bottom-shelf champagne, "I survived the apocalypse" t-shirts, excessive sequins and -- most importantly -- New Year's resolutions that may or may not last beyond February.

You promise to lose weight or quit smoking or stop stalking your ex on Facebook, but what about those people that shoot for a slightly different goal in the new year? Sometimes these resolution-makers come up with brilliant challenges and other times -- well, ummm -- they share goals that are more "WTF?" than an adult dressed like the New Year's baby.

Got a Klout Score Over 60? You Can Get a Piece of Frostbox

UK startup Frostbox, which aims to be the Dropbox of social media, is offering up pieces of the company to investors -- but only those with Klout scores of 60 and above.

The program, run via Wahooly, is based on the premise that publicity from such social media mavens should translate into equity in the company. Dana Severson, co-founder and CEO of Wahooly, says the share of equity is based on the amount of social media activity. Severson declined to disclose exactly how much of Frostbox is being offered, though typically companies offer equity in 1% to 8% of their companies. Wahooly partnered with Klout last year.

Like previous funding efforts, Wahooly skirts SEC rules by offering i…

The Year Ahead: Cyber-Warfare Dilemma

The list of apocalypses is long: asteroids, disease, nuclear war -- but the one that worries officials? Cyber-warfare. And it's challenging how we think about national security.

In 2012, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta called attention to a "Cyber Pearl Harbor." The catchphrase summarizes what government and defense officials have been saying for some time now: Foreign computer hackers are growing increasingly powerful in their ability to disrupt the nation's vital systems.

Pearl Harbor conjures up images of planes streaking across the morning sky, sinking ships and scrambling soldiers and airmen, all framed by those incongruous palm trees. But a massive attack on a centralized fle…

3 Things Marketers Can Learn From the Media

We’ve seen a lot of changes in media this year: from new devices and multiple screens driving responsive design, to the rise of native advertising, and the importance of imagery on social networks. The media is an industry that, for the most part, tends to innovate quickly, at the risk of dying. And most of the trends and disruptions that media face usually affect marketers shortly thereafter. So with that, here are three things the media has learned this year that marketers ought to pay attention to as they head into 2013.

1. Integration Is the Way of the Future

The media world moves too fast for marketing, public relations and social media to continue to operate in silos. Companies…

LEGO Santa Claus is One Tough Dude

Santa Claus is coming to town, and he kind of looks like he can destroy it. Hope you've been nice, or he's decking you instead of your halls.

Cartoonist Mark Anderson built these Christmas-themed Santas complete will ability to launch coal at your front door -- or at least look more menacing than the jolly ol' fat man who hugs elves all day.

Instagram Vows: We Won’t Use Your Photos in Ads

Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom vowed Tuesday to remove language from the service's privacy policy that seemed to say Instagram was going to allow user pictures to be employed in advertising.

"The language we proposed ... raised questions about whether your photos can be part of an advertisement," Systrom wrote in a blog post entitled "Thank you and we're listening."

"We do not have plans for anything like this, and because of that we’re going to remove the language that raised the question."

The overall tone of the blog post is one of clarification, rather than retraction. Systrom does apologize that the language wasn't clear enough. "Legal documents are easy to misinterpret,…

Starbucks Twitter Hashtag Campaign Becomes Forum for Brand-Bashing

A seemingly innocuous Starbucks Twitter campaign in the UK backfired on the coffee giant when critics used the #SpreadTheCheer hashtag to bash the brand.

To compound the embarrassment, the tweets were displayed live at the Natural History Museum in London over the weekend. Starbucks has made headlines in the UK recently when it was disclosed that the company paid just £8.5 million ($13.8 million) in taxes in Britain, despite sales of £3 billion ($4.9 billion). Though many fans offered their heartfelt suggestions on how to spread cheer, others referenced the tax issue.

I like buying coffee that tastes nice from a shop that pays tax. So I avoid @starbucks #spreadthecheer—…

Guy Will Change His Name to Headsetsdotcom for $45,000

A man in Florida will legally change his last name to Headsetsdotcom after orchestrating an eBay-style auction that allowed a person or company to buy the rights to his name for one year.

Jason Sadler announced last week that Headsets.com had purchased the rights to his name for $45,000. The Jacksonville native, a communications specialist with a bachelor's degree in graphic design from the University of North Florida, will take on the name Headsetsdotcom for the full 2013 calendar year—so long as a judge approves of the change in court.

Sadler told Fox News on Thursday that Headsetsdotcom barely edged out Pawnupdotcom for the rights to change his name.

“They went back and f…

Instagram Now Shares Your Data With Facebook

Instagram has updated its privacy policy to reflect that the company was acquired by Facebook.

In the preface to the changes, Instagram is quick to point out two important details -- users still choose who can see their Instagram photos, and they still get to choose whether they post photos on Facebook.

That said, the new policy introduces the notion of "affiliates" (not present in the old privacy policy), which, we presume, primarily means "Facebook".

From the new policy:

"We may share User Content and your information (including but not limited to, information from cookies, log files, device identifiers, location data, and usage data) with businesses that are legally part of…

Windows Phone 7.8 Starts Rolling Out to Nokia 800

Nokia has started rolling out its Windows Phone 7.8 software to some Nokia 800s, WP7.nl reports.

Microsoft's not-quite-WP8 update for devices which launched with Windows Phone 7 will also be coming to Nokia Lumia 510 and 900, but Lumia 800 seems to be first to take the plunge.

After the update, Lumia 800 owners can expect a number of upgrades, including resizable Live Tiles, more theme and accent colors, and a Bing-adorned lock screen.

As far as other WP7 handsets go, Microsoft said those will be getting the WP7.8 update in early 2013.

IBM: Computers Will See, Hear, Taste, Smell and Touch in 5 Years

Today's PCs and smartphones can do a lot -- from telling you the weather in Zimbabwe in milliseconds, to buying your morning coffee. But ask them to show you what a piece of fabric feels like, or to detect the odor of a great-smelling soup, and they're lost.

That will change in the next five years, says IBM. Computers at that time will be much more aware of the world around them, and be able to understand it. The company's annual "5 in 5" list, in which IBM predicts the five trends in computing that will arrive in five years' time, reads exactly like a list of the five human senses -- predicting computers with sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch.

The five senses are really all part…
