AP Twitter Hack Falsely Claims Explosions at White House

The Associated Press falsely tweeted on Tuesday news that the White House was subjected to two explosions and President Obama had been injured. The message was a part of an alleged hack on the wire service's Twitter account.

"Breaking: Two Explosions in the White House and Barack Obama is injured," the AP tweeted.

The @AP Twitter account — which has since been suspended while the organization looks into security issues — quickly clarified it had been compromised. Twitter users were also fast to debunk the claims, and AP staffers took to the site to say the tweet was fake.

The language of the tweet was out of the company's signature AP style: the word "breaking" was not capitalized and it typically refers to Obama with the term "President" before his name. The tweet also came directly from the web, and the company usually uses the tool Social Flow to send tweets. Read more...
